Beatty tells Montag that the decline of books started around the Civil War. People became more interested in gossip and television, and books were condensed. Also, since some authors argued about the Civil War and had different opinions, there was conflict, and it was thought that in order to get rid of that conflict, it would be better to do away with the books. My reaction is that people became more interested in human interest and short ways to get news and entertainment instead of reading a thought-provoking book. It seemed that people didn't want to involve themselves in any of the difficult decisions anymore, they would rather push it to the back of their minds and enjoy the entertainment of television instead of going through the work of reading a book.

Check the questions a listener should ask himself to judge a speaker's speech (Mark all that apply.).
horrorfan [7]
I would say that all these questions are valid and to the point though perhaps a little less so re the dress. If the speaker is logical, gives sufficient evidence based on solid facts and obviously knows his subject either being an authority on the subject or showing that he/she has closely consulted with those who are, then the speech should be well received.

Answer:

1. If people are lazy and wasting time by gossiping, mere political freedom won’t make any difference for them. So, Tagore says that we should strive tirelessly to achieve perfection in the longer run. To make it easy, we should work hard and not get tired by working. Our aim should be to attain perfection in whatever we do.

2. Tagore envisions the "clear stream of reason" as people caring about what affects them. He wants people to use their voice to take action.

3. Dead habit refers to mindless practicing of obsolete customs and traditions, old beliefs, superstitions and a narrow-minded attitudes. This habit corrodes the mind and renders it useless.
