The Bengal School of Arts, commonly referred to as the Bengal School, emerged in the early 20th century as a vanguard and nationalist movement that reacted to Western academic art styles that were previously promoted in India. Also known as "Indian painting style" in its early days, this painting was led by Abanindranath Tagore (1871–1951) and supported by English art teacher EB Havell. Following the influence of Indian spiritual ideas in the West, Havell sought to reform teaching methods at Calcutta School of Art by encouraging students to emulate Mughal miniatures.
