The United State (US)  is the third largest country in the world by area which encompasses an area of 9.8 million square, divided in 48 contiguous states,  two non-contiguous states of Hawaii and Alaska and  the capital's federal district.

Along with this partition, the US Census Bureau divided the US into<em> four regions</em> in order to collect statistical data easier.  

Such regions are: West, Midwest, South and Northeast.

West: It is divided into two major divisions; the Mountains and the  Pacific.  

Midwest: It is subdivided into two divisions; West North Central and East North Central.

South; It includes the divisions ; West South Central  East South Central  and South atlanctic.

It just allowed them to do the things they were suppose to do during that time period (they were usually college-age, which meant that the GI bill allowed them to go to college either for 'free' or 'reduced-rate' (the Government paid for it) )
