Another term for the Age of Exploration is the Age of Discovery.  It lasted from 15th century to 17th century.  It involved European explorers using navigational skills to travel the world.  European countries were looking for new trade routes.  They had previously used the Silk Road.  This was mostly over land, but they wanted to trade faster.

You also have to remember that the explorers of that time (CC) were funded by various people of royalty.  CC was funded by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain.  

This all occurred previously to an increased knowledge of the world and how to travel to places by water.
