TIA/EIA distinguishes three possible cabling types for
horizontal wiring and these are UTP, STP, or fiber optic cable. UTP stands for
unshielded twisted pair cables. This is a common type of cable that contains of
two unshielded wires warped
around each other. This is mostly used in LANs and telephone wires. STP or
shielded twisted pair is comparable to UTP but with each pair protected by an extra copper
braid jacket. This wires are often used in Ethernet networks. And lastly, fiber
optic cables are frequently used as a way to transfer light between the two
ends of the fiber and catch wide usage
in fiber-optic communications, where they let broadcast over longer spaces and
at higher data rates than cable wires.
