The word "autobiography" refers to a genre in writing in which someone wrote about his/her life. It is believed, this term was first used in England by William Taylor at the end of the 18th century, although autobiographies had been used even from the classical period they were not referred as autobiographies but different terms were used instead. In the case of the U.S., it is believed one of the first autobiographies was the one written by Benjamin Franklin from 1771 to 1790 that it is believed also served as an example and guide to other authors that wrote their own autobiographies after Franklin and that included other settlers, African-Americans, immigrants and even Native Indians. Therefore, one of the earliest autobiographies in the U.S. was written by Benjamin Franklin.
