The Flying Tigers was the first American volunteer group to work for the Chinese Air Force during 1941 and 1942. There were American pilots from the United States Army Air Corps, Navy and Marine Corps, and their commander was Lee Chennault whom under Presidential Authority, recruited and commanded the group.

The group was set to train in Burma before America´s official entry into World War II. They were formed by Three fighting squadrons and each one had about 30 airplanes. The principal mission for the Flying Tigers was to defend China against the Japanese forces, and stop their advance into China´s territory. All of the volunteers of the group were officially integrated into the Chinese Air Force. Some of the members of the group were civilians but mainly the recruits came from the Us military.

All members of the group had contracts paying them from $250 for an airplane mechanic to $600 for a pilot and about $750 for a commander. Also, they were paid $500 extra for every Japanese plain they destroyed.  The overall pay was an excellent incentive, since it was more than three times what they were making in the US military.

The first combat mission for the group came on December 20th 1941, exactly 12 days after the attack of Pearl Harbor. The group gained notoriety by showing new and innovative tactical victories to defeat the Japanese pilots. When most of the news in America was about defeats caused by the Japanese, they were the starts and gave a lot of hope that the US will soon defeat the Japanese. During its missions the group downed 291 enemy aircraft while only suffering 14 pilot losses.

Why did the British and Americans decide to focu<br> defeating Germany during World War II?
julia-pushkina [17]

Answer:

Europe first, also known as Germany first, was the key element of the grand strategy agreed upon by the United States and the United Kingdom during World War II.

Explanation:

. According to this policy, the United States and the United Kingdom would use the preponderance of their resources to subdue Nazi Germany in Europe first. Simultaneously, they would fight a holding action against Japan in the Pacific, using fewer resources. After the defeat of Germany—considered the greatest threat to the UK and the Soviet Union[1]—all Allied forces could be concentrated against Japan.

At the December 1941 Arcadia Conference between President Franklin Roosevelt and Prime Minister Winston Churchill in Washington, shortly after the United States entered the War, the decision for the "Europe First" strategy was affirmed. However, U.S. statistics show that the United States devoted more resources in the early part of the war to stopping the advance of Japan, and not until 1944 was a clear preponderance of U.S. resources allocated toward the defeat of Germany.
