<span>Water is a one-of-a-kind substance for many reasons. An obvious one is its unique ability to absorb heat. Water is able to absorb heat - without increasing much in temperature - better than many substances. This is because for water to increase in temperature, water molecules must be made to move faster within the water; this requires breaking hydrogen bonds, and the breaking of hydrogen bonds absorbs heat.</span>

Commercial logging destroyed __________ percent of old-growth forests.
Nitella [24]

Commercial logging destroyed 45 percent of old-growth forests.

Logging, or commercial logging, involves cutting trees for sale as timber or pulp. The timber is used to build homes, furniture, etc. and the pulp is used to make paper and paper products. Logging is generally categorized into three categories:  selective, clear-cutting and strip logging.

  • Selective logging is selective because loggers choose only wood that is highly valued, such as mahogany.
  • Clear-cutting is not selective. Loggers are interested in all types of wood and therefore cut all of the trees down, thus clearing the forest, hence the name- clear-cutting.
  • Strip logging involves the clear-cutting of a relatively thin strip of forest that parallels a river (goes along the river) along a slope.  A gallery forest (bordering the river) is left intact, but a strip is cut immediately upslope and the desirable timber is removed by a road that is also designed to parallel the river. Following this, another strip is cut several years later immediately upslope to the first strip and the road.

Naddika [18.5K]

Answer:

A neuron's nucleus is located in its CELL BODY

A nerve impulse moves toward a neuron's cell body along AXON

Explanation:

A neuron consists of three major parts: cell body, dendrite and the axon.

1) The cell body consists of the nucleus and cytoplasm

2) Dendrites are short cytoplasmic filaments which conduct impulses towards the cell body

3) Axon is made up of a single, long fibre which transmits impulses away from the cell body

A mutation that disrupts the ability of an animal cell to add polysaccharide modifications to proteins would most likely cause d
sashaice [31]

Answer:

Golgi apparatus and extracellular matrix

Explanation:

The Golgi complex lies at the heart of the secretory pathway and is responsible for modifying proteins and lipids, as well as sorting newly synthesized molecules to their correct destination. As a consequence of these important roles, any changes in its proteome can negatively affect its function and in turn lead to disease.

Disruption of specific transport steps between the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), Golgi complex, endosomal-lysosomal system and the plasma membrane all can have dramatic consequences on the cell, and increasingly defects in the molecular machinery regulating membrane traffic are being linked to hereditary diseases.

Any changes to the proteome of the Golgi complex would affect its homeostasis and consequently the flux of proteins trafficking through it.

One possible consequence of mutations in Golgi complex proteins is that they cause gross changes in the morphology of the entire organelle and protein mislocalization, which together result in functional problems such as impairment of glycosylation.

Genetic studies of humans and mice continue to highlight the nonredundant mechanical role of components in complexes that anchor cells to extracellular matrices. At the same time, recent data provide exciting insights into, critical roles of transcription factors in regulating differentiation and function of matrix-producing cells.
