Los partidos políticos son muy importantes para un sistema democrático, en especial para un sistema democrático representativo, y podemos decir que lo son principalmente por dos razones:

  • Aglutinan intereses diversos, formando coaliciones entre diferentes grupos sociales, que terminan siendo representados en la arena política por algunos miembros que terminan siendo electos como representantes.
  • Forman opinión pública al ofrecer un programa de gobierno a la población. Esta función está relacionada con la anterior ya que dichos programas de gobierno suelen provenir de la unión de intereses diversos de la coalición que el partido representa.
