Water has a high specific heat, which means that it can raise or lower its temperature greatly without changing its physical state, but otherwise it takes longer to happen compared to other substances. Since water occupies about 70% of the earth's surface, this property helps to control global warming. Oceans store heat in warm weather that is released in cold weather.
