What is the author’s purpose in the Above passage, and how does he achieve it through his organization and choice of details
Orlov [11]

Okay. I cannot see the article, again but will try my hardest to answer this anyway.

The purpose can usually be seen in the first sentence or paragraph (unless you have an excerpt). Though it may not be too specific it will usually be backed up by evidence later in the passage. A purpose can always be proven by text details.

Choice of details: should support the purpose

organization: Some things are good for some purposes.

e.g. cause effect, shows the good or bad effects of a purpose. The author can support the purpose or no.

chronological can show how something has changed over time.

etc.

Try to identify the main structure and how the passage is organized and how it supports the main idea.

Read this excerpt from The Grapes of Wrath:The driver munched the branded pie and threw the crust away. "Times are changed, don'
Alja [10]

Which word best describes the tone of this excerpt?

The correct answer is D. Sympathetic

 • The word that best describes the tone is sympathetic. When the driver says, “Times are changed, don’t you know?” is looking for a change in the mind of his listener. He is trying to cause a reaction so that the listener makes sense of the reality. In the sentence, “Get your three dollars a day, feed your kids” The driver is asking his listener to do the actions that matter, he is asking the listener not to deviate from the path that is going to take him or her to live day by day. During the complete excerpt, the driver is showing compassion and sensitivity to the listener’s emotions.
