Independent regulatory commissions are agencies of the federal government which are independent of the federal executive departments headed by a Cabinet secretary. The reason why the agencies are "independent" is because they are meant to impose regulations free of political influence. This means that they are also independent of presidential control. Some examples are the Federal Communications Commission and the Securities and Exchange Commission.
