The Treaty of Versailles was enacted in 1919 as the paece agreeement that ended WWI and it signed between the Allied victorious powers and Germany. Its two major outcomes were the following:

  • Germany, together with its allies, was forced to assume the whole responsibility for all the losses and all the damage caused.
  • Germany had to disarm and renounce to some of its territories. Moreover, war reparations were imposed on Germany, in the form of very large money sums, that had to be paid to the victorious contries.

This treaty was not very sucessful in relieving the tensions that had characterized WWI, and its provisions would be connected to the causes of the subsequent WWII.

The first outcome of the treaty of Versailles is that Germany was forced to pay for the damages the war had caused. The second one is that Germany lost its former colonies in Africa.

EXPLANATION:

There are cons and pros of the Treaty of Versailles:

List of Cons of the Treaty of Versailles

1. Too Harsh on Germany

Rivals of the treaty demand that the reparation is given to Germany and its associates were plentiful and that the compensation figure was too high. They claim that claiming Germany and the countries that helped the Germans to condemn areas to receive full responsibility on the battle was also over the top.

2. Reparation Not Imposed

Commentators of the Treaty of Versailles stated that the treaty had no teeth since it took more than 10 years of negotiations about remunerating repairs to Germany and its associates they have to remunerate. And to make troubles worse, in 1932, an indefinite postponement in compensations to be made was provided to Germany.

3. Germany Targeted

According to the people who were not pledged by the treaty, the Allied Powers forced Germany to follow and accept all articles of the Treaty of Versailles asked. Additionally, separated from other nations operating with Germany, the focus of the forfeit and reparation was completely in Germany.

Pros of the Treaty of Versailles:

1. Military Restrictions on Germany

With the ratification of this treaty, Germany’s control to attack again and to initiate damage and upcoming wars was restricted. Germany has been resolved and urged to decrease the number of its armies and just has an army of 100,000 people and no more than this for departments of three cavalries and seven infantries. Besides, it triggers the departments and support units of the organization where the General Staff was adjourned. The treaty basically forbade Germany from owning a huge size of people in the military.

2. Payment for Reparations

Supporters of the Treaty of Versailles claim that this peace treaty triggers Germany to recompense war victims and the destruction it has affected the countries they conquered. Germany had to pay several countries totaling 132 million Marks or around $ 31.4 billion in 1921 as part of the treaty. This is around $ 442 billion at today's rate of exchange.

3. Peace and Territorial Concessions

The authorization of the treaty terminated the war which persuaded people that there is no other battle threat. It also pushed Germany to give up its zone and give back the freedom to the countries it had conquered.
