Via had warned me about lunch in middle school, so I guess I should have known it would be hard. I just hadn’t expected it to be this hard. Basically, all the kids from all the fifth-grade classes poured into the cafeteria at the same time, talking loudly and bumping into one another while they ran to different tables. You can see a lot in this short passage; a crowded cafeteria with students walking around, trying to get to their tables, people secretly staring at August, then you see Summer. You can hear the ambiance of the cafeteria as kids are talking to one another, and it is loud.
How do these details affect the mood or emotional setting of your novel or short story at this point?
At first, the mood seems scary and nerve-racking because this is Auggie’s first day and he’s not sure where to sit. But then, the mood is enlightened when Summer approaches August in a friendly way and starts up a conversation with him.
