Marlow, is the main character in the novel Heart of Darkness, written by English-Polish writer Joseph Conrad. This story, aside from telling the experiences lived by sailor Marlow when he had to travel to the heart of Africa, in the Congo, is a strong criticism against the effects of imperialism, especially British imperialism, over Africa. In the beginning of the story, when Marlow is at the Thames with the initial Narrator of the story and other characters, the other characters think of London as the epitome of civilization and think of the glorious British adventurers, like Roman adventurers. But for Marlow, the image of London is totally different. When he is reflecting on what he sees, he takes himself to think about how the Romans saw England for the first time, as a dark, mysterious, obscure place, inhospitable and filled with savages, that they needed to tame. He likens the London seen by Romans when they first arrived with the Congo that he once visited in his voyage. The correct answer is A.

How do these two poems differ in what they emphasize?
VARVARA [1.3K]

Answer:

B) The poet in "Old Ironsides" asks for the ship to be destroyed, while the poet in "Concord Hymn" asks that the monument stone be preserved.

Explanation:

Old Ironsides" by Oliver Wendel Holmes Sr, asks for the old ship to be destroyed or sink. We can see that the poet asks for the destruction of the ship when he says

<em>"...No more shall feel the victor's tread,</em>

<em>Or know the conquered knee;-</em>

<em>The harpies of the shore shall pluck</em>

<em>The eagle of the sea!</em>

<em> </em>

<em>O, better than her shattered hulk</em>

<em>Should sink beneath the wave;..."</em>

We can see that the old navy had its glory days, but now it is old, and it is not of use, as it was.

On the other hand, Ralph Waldo Emerson in "Concord Hymn" asks for the monument to be preserved since it is commemorating a special event. The stone monument is there to honor and remember the heroes of a battle that happened there.

We can see that the poet asks for the monument stone to be preserved when he says,

<em>"On this green bank, by this soft stream,</em>

<em>We set today a votive stone;</em>

<em>That memory may their deed redeem,</em>

<em>When, like our sires, our sons are gone.</em>

<em> </em>

<em>Bid Time and Nature gently spare</em>

<em>The shaft we raise to them and thee." </em>
