The answer is B & D

Further explanation

SALT II is the first nuclear weapons agreement considered to be a real reduction of strategic power to 2,250 carrier vehicles in all categories for both countries. SALT II has helped the U.S. to discourage the Soviets from supplying a third generation of inter-continental missiles consisting of SS-17, SS-19 and SS-18.

The agreement was reached in Vienna on June 18, 1979, and was signed by Leonid Brezhnev and Jimmy Carter. In response to the unwillingness of the United States Congress to ratify the treaty, a young senator from the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Senator Joseph Biden of Delaware, met with Soviet Foreign Minister Andrey Gromyko, "educated him about American concerns and interests" and managed to get some a change in which both US Secretary of State and President Jimmy Carter did not succeed.

Six months after signing the treaty, Soviet troops were deployed to Afghanistan, and in September of the same year, several senators including Henry M. Jackson and Frank Church discovered what they called the "Soviet bridge" in Cuba. As a result of these events, the agreement was never formally ratified by the United States Senate. Nonetheless, the terms were obeyed by both countries until 1986 when the Reagan Administration withdrew from SALT II after accusing the Soviets of violating this pact.

Answer: B & D

The Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty II aimed to:

b. Banned any new development of nuclear weapons

d. Managed to reduce the size of their nuclear arsenals

Explanation:

The Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty II or SALT II was the continuation of a previous attempt to regulate the nuclear arms threat between the US and the USSR. This happened during a period known as the Cold War where the world was divided into 2 blocks competing for power: the Capitalist block led by the US, and the Communist block led by the USSR.

Both countries had developed large arsenals of nuclear weapons and a war between them would've had catastrophic consequences. Talks between President Jimmy Carter and Premier Brezhnev began in November 1974. They agreed to: limit the size of their nuclear arsenals, limit the development of new weapons, and limit the deployment of new offensive weapons.

The treaty was signed on June 18, 1979.

Why was a severe downturn in oil prices during the early '80s detrimental to the Soviet economy? It was an oil-exporting nation.
Artemon [7]

Answer:

It was an oil-exporting nation.

Explanation:

During the 1980s, the Soviet Union saw a severe downturn in oil prices. This, in turn, led to a decrease in production. Between 1988 and 1995, the oil production of the nation dropped by almost 50%. During this time period, oil was one of the main exports of the Soviet Union, which meant that these fluctuations in price greatly damaged its economy. Moreover, the damage to the economy weakened the nation, allowing for the change of regime to take place.
