The Yalta and Potsdam conferences were critical meetings between the leaders of the three strongest allied powers during World War II. This included the leaders of the United States, Soviet Union, and Great Britain. Even though these three countries agreed on several different terms (like the need for unconditional surrender from Germany and Japan) there were some rivalries starting to unfold. The biggest rivalry, which would lead to the Cold War, was between the US and Soviet Union.

During the Yalta Conference, the Soviet Union agreed to hold free elections in Eastern Europe after the end of World War II. However, they broke this promise. This broken promise caused a serious problem, as the United States was worried that these Eastern European countries would become completely controlled by the Soviet Union. This would allow for the system of communism to spread across a significant portion of Europe. This broken promise leads to one of the biggest consequences in world history, the Cold War.
