Phobia: Phobia refers to an extreme and irrational fear of something. It can also be an aversion to something. Philip has a fear of public speaking that began when he forgot a speech in elementary school.

Sympathetic Nervous System: This is one of the response to stressful situations. It is activated by the hypothalamus due to both physical and psychological stress. It directs the body’s rapid involuntary response to dangerous or stressful situations. As graduation approaches, Philip starts to have difficulty sleeping and loss of appetite.

Intrinsic Motivation: This refers to doing something just because it is enjoyable rather than for any external reward. Prior to the graduation, Philip has been working with his drama teacher to help him overcome his fear of public speaking.

Positive Reinforcement: This is a form of reward for performing a task. People can also seek positive reinforcement before they perform an action just so that they perform well. Philip tried to get reinforcement his guidance counselor before his presentation.

Extroversion: This is the inclination to obtain gratification from outside oneself. By questioning whether he would be able to present his speech and impress a large crowd, Philip is trying to obtain gratification from others.

Altruism: This refers to a selfless concern for the happiness and well-being of others. Philip is concerned about how his message would impact others who may be able to learn from his journey of being a child of divorce and immigration.

Elaborating Rehearsal: This is done by helping ones short term memory to store information in ones long term memory. Philip has been preparing to give the valedictorian speech at his high school.
