Chromosome abnormalities are commonly screened in maternal blood tests, for example Trisomy 21 (Down Syndrome) which is called this way because it refers to chromosome 21 having three sets rather than two. Another chromosome abnormality tested is trisomy 18 (Edward syndrome) that refers to the three sets in chromosome 18 rather than two which is observed in normal babies. Neural tube defects are tested as well. Specifically anencephaly which literally means "brain less" as the brain does not develop normally and spina bifida where the vertebrae have an opening and thus expose the nerves to damage and the baby cannot control their lower limbs and may suffer from paralysis.
