The correct answer to this open question is the following.

U.S citizens felt that President Roosevelt´s decision to support a Panamanian revolt against Columbia was the right thing to do to help Panama get its Independence and to secure the United States' interests in the region. Of course, Colombian citizens felt angry about this decision because Panama belonged to Colombia at that time, and it was a strategic place for trade and economy.

Panama got its independence from Colombia on November 3, 1903. The Panama Channel COmpany had supported the government of Panama, and this economic and political interest made the government of the United States support the Panamanian leaders. US President Theodore Roosevelt directly supported the rebels in Panama and order to send a US warship called "Nashville" to the coasts of Panama.
