Após o auge vivido nos dois primeiros séculos da Era Cristã, o Império Romano viveu anos de extrema dificuldade. Uma série de fatores reuniu-se para que um dos maiores impérios do mundo Antigo viesse a ruir paulatinamente, podemos apontar a crise do sistema escravista, a estagnação comercial, a diminuição da produção agrícola e a pressão exercida pelos povos germânicos que viviam nas fronteiras do império.

Durante o auge da economia imperial, a produção de riquezas dependia intimamente do vasto número de escravos. Provenientes das regiões dominadas por Roma, esses escravos eram utilizados nas grandes propriedades responsáveis pelo abastecimento da população romana. No entanto, a falta de escravos (observada a partir do século III) acabou gerando uma recessão econômica sentida pela diminuição da produção agrícola e a diminuição dos impostos arrecadados pelo império.
