From Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë Not a tear rose to Burns’s eye; and, while I paused from my sewing, because my fingers quiver

ed at this spectacle with a sentiment of unavailing and impotent anger, not a feature of her pensive face altered its ordinary expression. “Hardened girl!” exclaimed Miss Scatcherd, “nothing can correct you of your slatternly habits: carry the rod away.”
What is Miss Scatcherd likely feeling during this scene?

She is angry that she cannot get a reaction from Helen Burns.

She is embarrassed that she has punished Helen Burns.

She is impressed that Helen Burns does not cry.

She is pleased that Helen Burns has learned a lesson from her punishment.

<span>She is angry that she cannot get a reaction from Helen Burns.

In the passage it is clear that Burn's does not cry, so Miss Scatchered s not getting a reaction out of her. It doesn't seem that Helen has learned anything from the punishment. Her exclamation of "Hardened girl!" shows her frustration to teach Helen a lesson.</span>

How does the conversation with her brother affect Celeste?
lesya [120]

Answer:

A. It convinces her that she must resist the teacher's punishment.

Explanation:

Aida Bortnik's short story "Celeste's Heart," tells the story of a young girl standing up for an injustice she believes is subjected to in school. The little girl Celeste finds herself standing up for what she believes is wrong for the sake of her little brother's future.

After being punished by her teacher at school, Celeste began to change when her brother asked <em>"When am I going to go to school?"</em> This made her think of <em>"him in the middle of the schoolyard, with his arm stretched out measuring the distance, the body tense, feeling cold and angry and afraid, in a line in which all the others were as small as he was."</em> This realization made her convinced that she must resist the teacher’s punishment for the sake of her little brother.

Thus, the correct answer is option A.
