The words “Immediately thereafter” are an example of irony and the answer why lies in their definition.

Immediately means “instantly”.
Thereafter means “after some time”.

If something is “immediate”, then it happens in an instant.
But, if something happens “thereafter”, then it was not instant; Thus creating irony.
