The Democratic Party was founded in 1828 on the ideals of Andrew Jackson and Martin van Buren. The color most often associated with democrats is Blue. This party traces its origins to the Democratic-Republic party founded by Jefferson, Madison, and other Federalist opponents. The party split after dissent over who would succeed President Monroe, the Democratic faction were loyal to may old Jeffersonian ideals. The background of this party is said to lie with the "common man", supporting farmers, laborers, religious and/or ethnic minorities, and often favor supporting the poor.
Many support ideas such as universal health care, regular raising of minimum wage, improving public education, and diminishing the use of fossil fuels, equal opportunity, and are pro-immigration.
The Green Party was founded in 2001 and follows the ideals of "green politics" including: ecological wisdom, social justice, grassroots democracy, and nonviolence that criticize corporate control over government. They support nonviolence, equality between the sexes, anti-war and anti-racism.
Many support ideas such as single-payer healthcare (using taxes to pay for healthcare), tuition free public colleges, increasing before and after school programs, abolition of the death penalty, and reparations to the African American community.
The Libertarian Party is the third largest political party in the United States after the Democratic and Republican parties. It was found in 1971 by David Nolan and promotes civil liberties, lassiez-faire capitalism, non-interventionism, and shrinking the size of the government.
Many support ideas of taking government out of issues of abortion, gay marriage, gun ownership, deregulating the health care industry, and cutting all taxes.
