Semi-automatic and manual exposure modes let you adjust the three exposure triangle variables differently:
aperture (f / stop) - to manipulate depth of field (focus zone of photograph);
exposure time - to determine if moving objects will be in focus or out of focus;
the ISO sensitivity.
Avoid using both auto and scene modes as they do not allow you to have creative control of your photography. To achieve this control, use one of the four exposure modes listed below:
Try using a beauty light, if that doesn't work, then try and change the angle of where your standing. Get different shots and pick out the ones that have a softer natural light.
