Spanish American war changed the united state' foreign policy from isolationism to imperialism.

Explanation:

Before the Spanish American war, the founding fathers have adopted the policy of isolationism and equipped America to be focused in the development of the homeland. America spent much of its time in building the military might and a strong defensive mechanism. It felt that a powerful defense is necessary not only to save itself from the imperialistic European powers but also to intervene in global affairs in order to extend the influence of America.

United states needed coal producing and delivering ports in Pacific in order to transport coal through ships to the rich markets of Asia specially china. This necessitated America to  capture Guam and Philippines. Spain' imperial control over Cuba and United States Naval Ship called U S S Maine sank in Havana during the Cuban revolt against Spain and this captured the attention of America and America declared war on Spain.
