We granted no citizenship to Orientals, so now we have a group of people, some of whom have been here as long as fifty years who

have not been able to become citizens under our laws. Long before the war, an old Japanese man told me that he had great grand-children born in this country and that he had never been back to Japan, all that he cared about was here on the soil of the United States, and yet he could not become a citizen. What is the BEST question for the researcher to ask about this passage?
A. How long before the war did the old man tell this story?
B. How many great grand-children did the old man have?
C. Why did we not grant citizenship to Orientals?
D. Why do people want to be citizens?

I'd have to go with A. because, well... how many years before would tell us a lot about the time period and how old the character is.

criminal defendants must be tried by a jury of their peers, or fellow citizens. is this passive voice or active?
sleet_krkn [62]

Answer: The sentence is in passive voice.

Explanation:

When it comes to passive constructions with modal verbs, the general rule is:

Object + modal verb (can/could/may/must/should/ought to) + be + past participle.

In this case, the object is criminal defendants, followed by a passive construction - must (modal verb) + be + tried (past participle of verb to try).

which mood is created by thoreaus description of the pond A) serenity B) surprise C) amusement D) thankfulness
Arisa [49]
I agree with the person above - I believe the correct answer is A. serenity.
Thoreau was a transcendentalist, which means that he wrote about nature quite a lot. He believed that people should return to living in nature and escape from the concrete cities they were surrounded with in order to find their true selves once again. His description of the pond during the night and day creates a serene and peaceful picture one could relax to.
