Because it is always terrible when you are a slave! Imagine yourself being one! I personally cant.

Hi there! Slaves would be beaten (by whips) they would get very little food. They bascially were treated like wild animals, they would have to work in the heat all day long and they would get very little rest. Slaves that would try to escape would usually get caught. For punishment they would get whipped.
