 Stent placement

Stent placement is the procedure that involves the insertion of a device to hold open a vessel, usually performed after vascular surgery.

A stent is a tiny, metal or plastic mesh tube that enlarges within a coronary artery. Stent placement is usually required when the blood vessels are blocked with plaques. A stent is commonly placed during or directly after vascular surgery to keep the artery from closing up again and to maintain proper fluid or blood flow. Stents can also be embedded with medications (drug-eluting stent) to prevent the blockage of an artery.
