After the French and Indian War, the British government was in severe debt. This resulted in the government needing an additional revenue stream. With this in mind, the British government turned to the colonies since they technically protected the interests of the American colonists against the French during the French and Indian War. However, colonists were upset about this law because it was passed without a representative from the colonies having a voice in the British parliament. This would be just the beginning of events that lead to America's decision to declare independence from the United States.
