Which line shows conflict? I had stupidly hoped to make things better between us with a series of gifts and poems. She had a blue dress and a tan hat on the day I met her in the garden. The next morning all my hopes were dashed when I found the flowers limp and brown. The room smelled of gardenias, normally a smell I liked a great deal.

I think that it would be the first sentence. That's showing that someone (probably a girl) is not accepting this person's apology, telling us that something happened between them.
