Chinese rulers claimed they had the "Mandate of Heaven" which gives them the ability to rule over China.  Even earlier rulers claimed that they were a god in the flesh or a descendant of one.

Lewis and Clark were not able to find a water route across the continent and did not force native people out of US territory. Neither did they acquire the Louisiana Territory, the territory was acquired by Thomas Jefferson.
