The “I”what they’ve went through, and what their past ancestors went through as well. It is not just a poem that someone made up, but it is deeply a message they want to stick on you and tell you, “I’ve been there.”

The “I” portrays that the things that happen in the poem are real life things , that the person has went through and had to go through. It emphasises that the things that are explained are not made up but in fact they are the truth and they are actually things that have occurred.
