when an individual restate a text in another form or words in order to simplify or clarify it's meaning, it is refereed to as paraphrasing.

This implies using one's word to restate someone's else idea or message. However, in paraphrasing, the meaning and idea of the original must be maintained.

There are different guidelines for paraphrasing and these include:

  • You must read the original message three or four times to understands it clearly.
  • Place the original message or content aside and rewrite it in your own word. Rewrite what the source of the content says and try to reproduce the idea and emphasis of the source.
  • Check out for words that are familiar and carefully observe how the words are used by the writer.
  • Ensure you check your paraphrasing often and ensure it communicates the same message from the original source, change any word that are too close, if the words used in paraphrasing is close to words used in the original content, then it is plagiarism.  
  • It is necessary that you include citation from the original content, including page numbers so that the source can be cited accurately.
