In the days before Germany surrendered on May 8, 1945, President Harry S Truman appointed Associate Supreme Court Justice Robert H Jackson to be the chief prosecutor representing the United States in the proposed trials for the European Axis powers. Jackson helped lead the Allies—American, British, French, and Soviet governments—to an agreement called the London Charter, setting the procedures for the Nuremberg Trials. The London Agreement created the International Military Tribunal (IMT) on August 8, 1945, where each of the four Allied nations appointed a judge and a prosecution team.
The Harlem Renaissance was an intellectual, social, and artistic explosion that took place in Harlem, New York, spanning the 1920s. During the time, it was known as the "New Negro Movement", named after the 1925 anthology by Alain Locke. The Movement also included the new African-American cultural expressions across the urban areas in the Northeast and Midwest United States affected by the African-American Great Migration,[1] of which Harlem was the largest. The Harlem Renaissance was considered to be a rebirth of African-American arts.Though it was centered in the Harlem neighborhood of the borough of Manhattan in New York City, many francophone black writers from African and Caribbean colonies who lived in Paris were also influenced by the Harlem Renaissance. The Harlem Renaissance is generally considered to have spanned from about 1918 until the mid-1930s.Many of its ideas lived on much longer. The zenith of this "flowering of Negro literature", as James Weldon Johnson preferred to call the Harlem Renaissance, took place between 1924 and 1929.
After the assassination of U.S. President Abraham Lincoln on April 14, 1865, Vice President Andrew Johnson became President. At first, he appeared to be a Radical however he clashed with them, involving himself in a bitter struggle with Radical Republicans.
Some of the main reasons which caused the political conflict between the radical republicans and President Johnson were the Civil Rights Act, which was the first United States federal law to define citizenship and affirm that all citizens are equally protected by the law, and the four Reconstruction Acts, through which it was required to the Southern States to be readmitted to the Union.
Since Republican Radicals had full control of Congress they were able to override 15 of the 21 bills passed by Congress which Johnson had vetoed, including the Civil Rights Act of 1866 and four Reconstruction Acts, described above.
