This subset or sample will result after we select units from a larger population and it will enable us to make generalizations about the original population from which they were picked.

Sampling is required in any quantitive research,  and in some instances, there is a qualitative approach. They are called qualitative sampling: purposeful sampling, quota sampling, and snowballing sampling.
