During Hammurabi's time there existed 3 classes within Babylonia. The hierarchy which existed gave the propertied class the most value for humans. The propertied class consisted of those who owned land or property. In addition, to the propertied class, freedman and and slaves also existed in their own separate classes. The penalties under Hammurabi's Code or law were adjusted accordingly to enact the harshest physical punishments for those who assaulted the propertied classes, while only financial penalties would be incurred for a similar incident to a freedman and even less for a slave.
