What events that contributed to a hostile relationship between japan and the united states?

History

The relationship between the United States and Japan were cordial and friendly through the 18th and 19th centuries.

After the Japanese imposed the 21 Demands (1915) against China leading to outrage in the US, Britain, and China. This led to the 1924 American Immigration law that reduced the number of Japanese immigrants allowed to enter the United States leading to rising tensions.

Tensions became even more strained in the 1930's during the Sino-Japanese War in which the Japanese and China (an ally of the United States) went to war over Japan wanting to expand its empire and claim to raw goods and materials within China. The relationship also be came more hostile after Manchurian/Mukden Incident.

The United States took it upon themselves to impose harsh sanctions against the Japanese and the export and import of Japanese goods. They also cut off Japanese oil supply- wanting them to agree to leave China.

This angered the Japanese leading to the bombing of the Pacific area (including the US Naval Base of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii). This led to the beginning of World War II.

Attack on the harbor

Atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki

Japan surrendered to allied forces

Japan withdraws its troops from Indonesia

Further Explanation

The bombing of the harbor was an onrush administrated by the Japanese Navy against the Pacific Fleet of the navy anchored at harbor base of operations, Hawaii, on Sunday morning, December 7, 1941. This attack triggered direct US involvement in war II. The attack began at around 7:38 a.m. Hawaii Standard Time.

The navy base at the harbor was attacked by a minimum of 353 warplanes, bombers and torpedo planes from the Japanese Navy, in 2 waves of attack, which were dispatched from 6 Japanese Navy aircraft carriers.

After this event, Japan only declared war on u.s and started its operation within the Greater Asia-Pacific. This attack began the involvement of u. s. within the Pacific War.

The U.S dropped atomic bombs on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, in August 1945, the ultimate stage of the Second war. U.s. dropped a bomb with the approval of the UK as stated within the Quebec Treaty. the 2 bombing operations that killed a minimum of 129,000 people were the primary and last time using nuclear weapons in history.

On the day of the bombing, Hiroshima was a vital city in terms of industry and military. Several military units are based near Hiroshima, including the headquarters of the Second General Army led by marshal Shunroku Hata.

Before the atomic bombing, Hiroshima's population reached a peak of 381,000, then slowly fell thanks to the systematic evacuation administrated by the Japanese government. At the time of the attack, the population of Hiroshima was 340,000-350,000.

In contrast to Hiroshima, the majority of buildings in Nagasaki are of old Japanese style, manufactured from wood or wooden frame with wooden walls (with or without plaster), and with a clay roof. Many industries and little businesses were found out in wooden or other building materials that might not withstand an explosion. Nagasaki was allowed to develop without proper city planning; settlements were established near factories and other settlements as dense as possible throughout the economic valley of Nagasaki. On the day of the bombing, around 263,000 people were on Nagasaki, including 240,000 Japanese residents, 10,000 Korean residents, 2,500 Korean workers, 9,000 Japanese troops, 600 Chinese workers, and 400 Allied prisoners of war at the camp north of Nagasaki.

Many European countries began to object his ideas.

England, France, and Italy were mostly interested in regaining what they had lost and gaining more by punishing Germany. Germany quickly found out that Wilson’s blueprint for world peace would not apply to them.

Name the 4 long term causes of WW1 and how they will lead to war
bonufazy [111]

1- The late nineteenth century was an era of military competition, particularly between the major European powers. The policy of building a stronger military was judged relative to neighbours, creating a culture of paranoia that heightened the search for alliances. It was fed by the cultural belief that war is good for nations. Germany in particular looked to expand its navy. However, the ‘naval race’ was never a real contest – the British always s maintained naval superiority. But the British obsession with naval dominance was strong. Government rhetoric exaggerated military expansionism. A simple naivety in the potential scale and bloodshed of a European war prevented several governments from checking their aggression.

2- A web of alliances developed in Europe between 1870 and 1914, effectively creating two camps bound by commitments to maintain sovereignty or intervene militarily – the Triple Entente and the Triple Alliance.

- The Triple Alliance of 1882 linked Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy.

- The Triple Entente of 1907 linked France, Britain and Russia.

A historic point of conflict between Austria Hungary and Russia was over their incompatible Balkan interests, and France had a deep suspicion of Germany rooted in their defeat in the 1870 war.

3- Imperial competition also pushed the countries towards adopting alliances. Colonies were units of exchange that could be bargained without significantly affecting the metro-pole. They also brought nations who would otherwise not interact into conflict and agreement. For example, the Russo-Japanese War (1905) over aspirations in China, helped bring the Triple Entente into being. It has been suggested that Germany was motivated by imperial ambitions to invade Belgium and France. Certainly the expansion of the British and French empires, fired by the rise of industrialism and the pursuit of new markets, caused some resentment in Germany, and the pursuit of a short, aborted imperial policy in the late nineteenth century.

4- Nationalism was also a new and powerful source of tension in Europe. It was tied to militarism, and clashed with the interests of the imperial powers in Europe. Nationalism created new areas of interest over which nations could compete.

Which economic principle closely relate to your own personal beliefs and why? Capitalism, Socialism, or Communism??
NemiM [27]

This depends on what you believe in.

Historically, examples of each can be found in certain area and history of places, including the US for capitalism, P.R.C. for socialism, and the USSR for Communism.

Capitalism: Capitalism is the belief that private citizens should own the means of production as well as distribution, and that the market is not limited in any great way. People are free to produce what they want with little to no boundaries in the areas. Services and goods are provided based on supply and demand, and customers are free to choose which company or government agency to obtain these services and goods from.

Socialism: Socialism can be seen as a "borderline" Communism, in which the means of production, distribution, and exchange is regulated by the community based on what is produced and what is consumed. Socialism does not limit what kind of products appear, however.

Communism: Communism is a step further than Socialism, in which there is a heavily control of the type and amount of a product being produced, as well as what type of products go to the consumers. Different areas may receive different types of products. Communism is also extreme, for it advocates for a classless society, but it fails to do so and instead creates a totalitarian state.

To choose what type of economic principle closely relates to your beliefs, ask yourself some questions:

1) Do you believe in state-regulation? If yes, how much, and what is your limit? The less you believe in it, the more Capitalistic your view. The more you believe it, the more you lean to Communism.

2) Do you believe in having the freedom in being able to choose what type of company's product to buy? If you like to have choice, lean towards the Capitalistic view. If you do not, lean towards Socialism/Communism.

3) Do you believe in the freedom to believe in what you want? Do you believe that everybody has the right to believe in what they want?

If you do, then you will lean towards Capitalism; the less you believe it, the more left you lean.

~

There are other questions you can ask yourself that would give you a general idea of what you like. You can also find information regarding each sides of beliefs mostly from political and historical sources. In the end, it depends on what you believe in.
