While Germany were already fighting multiple fronts (Italy, Africa, and Russia), the invasion of the Normandy beaches as well as the pushthrough was really what helped defeat Germany, as Operation Neptune poured fourth large amounts of Allied troops, machinery, and other equipment needed to defeat the Germans.

In 1843 he lost in nomination for Congress and again lost in his re-nomination to Congress in 1848. He was defeated for Senate when legislature in Illinois elects Lyman Trumbull in 1855.
