The novel <em>A Tree Grows in Brooklyn</em> written by Betty Smith, an American author, is set in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York City during the the first two decades of the 20th century. It tells the story of Francie Nolan, a teenage girl, and her family, who live in a humble apartment in Brooklyn. The novel is split into five books and it was published in 1943. Some of the themes that it explores are poverty and alcoholism.
