Cognates are really simple. they are words that are almost the same in both languages. An example of a true one is: poem- el poema
A false cognate is asistir looks like asist but really it means to attend

You can use any form of the verb, but it has to be indicative. I have used the <u>present form</u> (the most used in these cases) of the verb "decir" (say).
