In the 1800s, the State of Virginia was socially divided. It was a hinge state, which shared ideologies with the south of the country, but whose northern part was totally overturned on the northern side. It was a state that accepted slavery, where 3 out of 10 inhabitants were slaves, but where the abolitionist movement had had a great influence (for example, in the Harpers Ferry Raid), with which the state of tension was evident.

At the time of Lincoln's election in 1860, the state governor was John Letcher, who hardly knew the southern secessionist movement, did not hesitate to accompany him. Thus, Virginia left the Union on April 17, 1861. When this happened, abolitionists in the northwest part of the state began to carry out massive protests and campaigns against the state government. Finally, political tension caused West Virginia to separate from Virginia on June 20, 1863, leaving the Confederacy and joining the Union with Republican Arthur Boreman as governor.
