Liberation theology became popular in Latin America during the 1960s as it restored the command of church from Upper class to the poor, whereas Christianity provided a tool for a better society and self-improvement.

Further Explanation:

Liberation Theology or Christian theology is based on the principle of Marxism that deepens the concern for the poor and oppressed peoples. It was widely practiced in politics during the mid 19th century by reformers such as Leonardo Boff of Brazil, Juan Luis Segundo from Uruguay, Gustavo Gutierrez of Peru and Jon Sobrino of Spain.

The theology in Latin America during the mid 19th century was within the catholic churchagainst the poverty and injustice prevailing in Latin America. The term was first coined by the Gustavo Gutierrez a Peruvian Priest in 1971. He also wrote a book defining this movement. The theory helped to restore the authority of the church back to the lower section of the society or the poorer section for the establishment of a superior society. The Liberation Theology though met opposition from the United States accused of using the Marxist concepts and rebuke of the Doctrine of Faith.
