In the story "The Masque of the Red Death," the main character dies in part due to an internal versus external conflict. In this story, Prospero is a man who wants to escape a disease called the red plague. For this purpose, he takes refuge in a fancy house with friends, living in luxury and holding parties. During one of these parties, a guest shows up, and it is later revealed that the guest is the red death. Prospero dies as a result of the conflict between himself and the disease.
