They faced a lot of discrimination such as having to go to separate schools, bathrooms, etc. They were the first ones to get laid off. They were bullied in ways such as black face. They had less of a chance of getting into a college as a white person in the same environment. Because they hardly ever got into college they couldn't get very good jobs.
