Which two themes are found in the following passage? Ever since she was a little girl, Tina was afraid of lizards. The mere sigh

t of the reptiles would send her into fits of screaming. However, Tina’s mother always told her that she should not judge a book by its cover. Tina was quite surprised when she discovered that her new neighbor, Mr. Pamuk, was a herpetologist who studied lizards! Gathering all her courage, Tina went over to Mr. Pamuk’s house, determined to know what a herpetologist does. Mr. Pamuk, a patient and gentle man, sensed Tina’s fear of lizards almost immediately. As someone who loved lizards and snakes, he tried his best to take away Tina’s fear. He explained to her that a herpetologist studies lizards, snakes, turtles, crocodiles, and even frogs. He told her that people jump to conclusions about reptiles without knowing the facts. Tina listened with amazement as he told her about a lizard that could change the color of its skin. Some lizards could even walk on water. Slowly, Tina began to forget her fear of lizards. In fact, she asked Mr. Pamuk if he would show her his pet iguana. Mr. Pamuk was happy to help.

otez555 [7]

Answer:

Metaphor

What is a metaphor?

A figure of speech in which a term or phrase is applied to something to which it is not literally applicable in order to suggest a resemblance, as in "A mighty fortress is our God."

In the sentence, "My son is a greyhound out of the blocks when it's hometime," the son is being compared to this because of how fast he runs to get home.

Hence, the technique used in the phrase, "My son is a greyhound out of the blocks when it's hometime" is a metaphor.

Vsevolod [243]

The word choices in the lines affect the mood of the story by making it tiring and strange. Words such as "tired" and "noisy" convey the lack of silence and, therefore, the exhaustion. Words such as "new" and "unfamiliar" convey the strangeness the character feels.

What is mood?

In literature, mood can be defined as the atmosphere created by an author in order to evoke certain feelings and emotions from his readers. To create a certain mood, diction, imagery, and setting are very useful.

In the excerpt we are analyzing here, the words "tired", "noisy", "new" and "unfamiliar" help create a tiring and strange mood. The character is clearly exhausted from dealing with a new and strange environment.
