The Independence of Canada was a long process that took several steps. The first significant event took place on July 1, 1867, with the passage of the British North America Act. This gave the Dominion of Canada the status of self-governing entity within the British Empire. Another important step was the Statute of Westminster in 1931. This acknowledge Canada as an equal to the United Kingdom within the Commonwealth. Finally, Canada became completely autonomous in 1982, when the Canada Act was passed in the UK Parliament which patriated the Canadian Constitution back to Canada.
