The Trail of Tears was a journey of over a thousand miles for the Cherokee people. This journey resulted in the Cherokee moving from their ancestral homeland of Georgia to modern day Oklahoma. This journey took a significant amount of time and resulted in many deaths due to the brutal cold faced by the Cherokee when marching to Oklahoma. Along with this, the lack of adequate clothing and shelter along this journey ensured that the tough weather conditions would have a significant impact on these people.

This was a part of the American Government’s solutions to the shortage of labor supply on the plantations of white settlers, and ‘resettle’ the native population in areas specifically designated for them.

The American Government formulated a plan of forced relocation during the 1830s of the Native Americans to a designated Indian territory, to the west of the Mississippi River. The Government utilized federal forces in the forcible removal of tribals, to settle them away from the white population. It was also a part of a plan to supplement the lack of labor supply in cotton plantations. About 125,000 Native Americans were forcibly displaced from their homes and were transported in extremely inhumane conditions. Most of them were forced to travel in cramped wagons or forced to walk long distances. This resulted in the death of about 15,000 people. The Trail of Tears is a term coined to denote the suffering of the indigenous tribal people. However, on the arrival of the survivors, there were no proper arrangements made for their relocation, no medical services or enough food facilities. Diseases were rampant, and many others died from outbreaks of famine and epidemics. This move was supported by Andrew Jackson and began atleast a decade before his presidency. The resettling of Native Americans was one of his primary agendas on the assuming of office. This had a devastating effect and created a psychological trauma for the native Indians.
