Even though many people believe that the monster is the main character, in Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein" the protagonist would be the scientist, Victor Frankenstein. His obsession with death is what leads him to create a creature from parts of several corpses. His ambition does bring some sort of success - he is indeed capable to create life from death. But, as he plays God, he does not take the possible consequences into consideration. His creation ends up choosing to be a monster with the premise that, if society will never accept it (the creature itself), it might as well kill and be the monster they've decided it is.

In his blinded obsession, the scientist did not take a moment to analyze that possibility: that his creature would want to have a normal life, while society would disregard it as human. Had he taken that into consideration, he might have curbed his desires and chosen better before pushing the limits of science.
