Thermal energy is caused by differences in temperature.

It is caused by movement and the movement is from one body to another. As the molecules of energy move they bump into each other and this reaction causes what is known as thermal energy, or simply put, heat, this is how heat is generated. It is present in all matters to a higher or a lower extent.
